In 2018, Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) became a legal obligation for many businesses in the U.K.
It is an annual requirement designed to increase awareness of energy costs within organisations and provide data to inform the adoption of energy efficiency measures, and encourage action to reduce business’ impact on climate change.
The regulations are enforced by the department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. Failure to meet these reporting regulations can lead to significant financial penalties.
Does SECR Apply
To Your Business?
SECR applies to all U.K. quoted companies as well as large unquoted companies that consumed more than 40,000 kWh of energy in the reporting period.
A large company is defined as one that meets two or more of the following criteria:
- More than 250 employees
- £36m or more turnover
- Balance sheet total of more than £18m
